Camping with ThirdWeekenders

group at a campsite in PotreroSo what’s it like to go camping with ThirdWeekenders besides a sober weekend?  Most people arrive at the camp grounds sometime on Friday, although some of us have been known to reserve day(s) prior to the campout so we can enjoy a longer weekend.

All are welcome to attend the Friday evening Dine-out at 5 pm, which is at a local eating establishment picked out by the WagonMaster.  No need for formal invitations, anyone who wants to join us are welcome.  Just follow the “wagon train” or get directions ahead of time and meet us at the restaurant.  (Everyone pays for their own meals, keeping things simple!)  After dinner, you are welcome to make your own arrangements with fellow campers or settle in your own campsite to enjoy the evening.

On Saturday morning, at 10 am, there’s a ladies’ meeting, all ladies in the group are welcome to attend.  (Yup, we’re excluding you gents, but just this one time.)  Your WagonMaster can tell you what happens at the ladies’ meeting.

In the afternoon, some people organize a walk, shopping trip (depending on where we’re camped), or some not so high stakes games (cards, board games, etc.).  There’s usually sharing of snacks, drinks, and laughs.

The next planned event on Saturday is the Pot Luck which starts promptly at 5 pm.  The reason it starts promptly at 5 pm, is everyone’s always eager to try all the delicious food, and if you dally too long, you may miss out on the favorites.  You never know what’s going to be served, but one thing’s for sure, it’s always DELICIOUS!  (One time, in the not too distant past, we had nearly all desserts – what a treat!  But, it only happened once!  We don’t coordinate the meals so we’re all secretly hoping dessert night will happen again.)

After dinner, there’s a group meeting around the camp fire at 7 pm.  We all bring chairs, coats, even blankets, (sometimes it gets pretty darn chilly).  When the meeting is over, lots of people hang around the fire chatting with each other.

On Sunday, we have a Pot Luck Breakfast which starts, again, promptly at 9 a.m.  This time it’s usually finger foods (minimal clean up before we have to break camp.)  The campgrounds require us to leave by noon on Sundays, so after some socializing, we all go about getting ready to leave for the city/home.

The group reserves some sites way ahead of time (like six months or more) so we can secure a place to camp.  Those sites are for anyone who wants to go camping that month on a first come first serve basis (which means whoever gets their money in first, gets the choice of available sites.)  Once those sites are gone, you are still welcome to join us, you just have to make your own reservations at the campground.  Since we mostly go to San Diego County Parks, you can make reservations online, just try to get sites as close to our original reserved sites.

Check out our schedule and plan to join us!
